Georgia Lions Camp operates on 62 acres of land next to Laura S. Walker State Park and was established as a non-profit organization on September 12, 1975. Its mission is to ignite the potential of individuals living with a visual impairment by providing transformative outdoor experiences that foster independence, self-confidence, and lifelong friendships while cultivating a spirit of adventure, personal growth, and inclusion in an empowering, supportive environment. The camp’s values are summarized as “I C GRREAT!” which stands for Inclusion, Community, Growth, Respect, Resilience, Empowerment, Adventure, and Transformation. Under the leadership of C.M. Blanton and with support from Lions Clubs across Georgia, the camp grew out of efforts that began in the early 1970s to create a dedicated camp for blind and visually impaired residents of Georgia.
The leadership team includes Director Casey Carver, Secretary Tonya Lastinger, and Facilities lead Clay Eddins. One parent, Jennifer Mann, described her child’s improvement in independent walking after attending Georgia Lions Camp and expressed pride and gratitude for the opportunity to attend. Another parent shared that their family loves the camp and the fun memories it has provided over the years. A previous staff member stated that the camp was very rewarding to them and that they were amazed at the campers and their accomplishments.
