Cancer Support Community, along with its Gilda’s Club partners, states that its mission is to uplift and strengthen people impacted by cancer by providing support, fostering compassionate communities, and breaking down barriers to care. As a Cancer Support Community affiliate, this program is part of the largest employer of psychosocial oncology mental health professionals in the United States and part of a global network that brings cancer support to people touched by cancer. Since 1998, more than 5,000 individuals and families have visited the clubhouse or outreach locations in Muscatine and Clinton. The organization notes that it relies on the generosity of the community to keep its programs free of charge and that there are an estimated 16,000 people in the community living with cancer. The program includes offerings for adults, children, and teens, and includes Noogieland, which is described by one participant as a place for kids to just be kids.

Participants have shared that Gilda’s Club offers grief groups, groups where people can laugh and cry together, and spaces where family members and survivors can talk with others who understand their experiences. One participant described finding a “family away from family,” while another said the program offered a place for kids to be themselves and for spouses and survivors to speak honestly in separate groups. Several participants noted that they did not pay for services and described the support they received as important to them.
