About
Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois Summer Camp (Camp Dean & Camp McCormick) includes activities such as a horseback riding outing and Adventure Camp outings. Camping options at these camps include tents, cozy cabins, and year-round lodges. Camp is often a busy and loud place, and all locations are in rustic environments where some parts of camp are ADA accessible and some are not.
• Ages: 5–17 years old
• Price: Each family is expected to pay a portion of the fees, including the $100 deposit required at the time of session registration.
The Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois' Camp Dean and Camp McCormick summer camp programs are accredited camps through the American Camp Association. Council-sponsored camping events are offered where activities and supplies are provided. Campers are supported by Camp Counselors, Program Aides, and Counselors-in-Training.
Meals at camp focus on homecooked options that are described as camper friendly and favorites for kids. A salad bar or breakfast bar and sandwich fixings are available at each meal. GSNI summer camp kitchens are allergy conscious and will prepare alternative meals separate from mainstream meals to help prevent cross contamination, but they are not 100% allergy-free and do not have dedicated allergy-free supplies. Every camper is provided meals at camp, and camp staff make accommodations for dietary needs and restrictions. Families do not need to provide their own alternative meals, but may bring favorite brands, snacks, or meals if desired, and are asked not to pack food in campers’ belongings because it will attract animals to tents or cabins.
Camperships are available only for active youth members of the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois who attend GSNI sleepaway or overnight and day camps at Camp Dean and Camp McCormick. Camperships do not cover prepaid Trading Post account funds, Camper Care Packages or Camper Care Kits, extra activity fees such as the horseback riding outing and Adventure Camp outings, day camp overnight fees, troop or family camp fees for youth or adults, or GSNI Council-Sponsored travel events and financial assistance. Camperships cannot be requested for troops to cover members attending troop camping, and troops are directed to use Cookie Dough, Cashew Cash, and troop fundraising to support troop camping.
The program states a mission of striving to be an inclusive community that provides equitable access for all, including those who require additional physical, mental, social, or emotional support. Camp Directors work directly with families to identify accommodations that can be made to meet the needs of every camper, focusing on their strengths, gifts, and assets. Camp staff will assist in all ways possible for campers with special requests or needs, and Camp Directors will work directly with camp staff to ensure all accommodations are met during each camp session. Camp staff are not professionals in medical, educational, or social work fields. Camp is described as a place to go on adventures, develop new skills, build new relationships, and strengthen existing ones.
