Calumet City’s Teen REACH Youth & Family Services program states that it creates happy, engaged, future-ready learners and provides high-quality out-of-school time that engages students in exploration of academic content in interesting and innovative ways. The program includes life skills education that encourages avoiding risk-taking behaviors in the areas of alcohol and/or substance use, criminal activity, violence, and sexual activity, as well as recreation, sports, and cultural activities to build friendships and gain developmentally relevant experiences. It also offers transportation pick-up and drop-off, emphasizes daily attendance for the full program session, and includes caregiver support and involvement opportunities for adults to meet with staff and participate in activities that strengthen adult/child bonds and community involvement. The development team has backgrounds in adult education, applied psychology, human resources development, instructional design, human factors, and knowledge management. Through service learning and community involvement, students complete service tasks combined with structured, youth-driven opportunities that link the tasks to self-reflection, self-discovery, and the acquisition and comprehension of values, skills, and knowledge content.
