Youth Summer Camps at The Science Center run on the following three-day sessions: June 1–3, 2026; June 15–17, 2026; July 29–July 1, 2026; July 13–15, 2026; and July 27–29, 2026. Campers must be at least 5 years old, be bathroom independent, and wear gym or tennis shoes rather than flip flops. Families are asked to send a sack lunch or have the child eat lunch before camp, and The Science Center provides healthy snacks and water throughout the day. Pre-registration is required and space is limited.
The Science Center’s mission is “To nourish and preserve each child’s innate curiosity through hands-on, inquiry-based exploration.” The museum has been incorporated since 1992 and has been located inside University Mall in Carbondale, Illinois for over 25 years, with over 65 exhibits and around 70,000 visitors annually. The Science Center is a member of the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC), offers reciprocal memberships with over 380 other museums, and is a recognized 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. Youth summer camps are led by a team that includes Museum Director and Program Director Connie Adams, who studied at Southern Illinois University with a focus on Chemistry, and Director of Exhibits Bill “Dino Guy” Adams, who has a degree in commercial graphic design and began his career in toy-making and creates life-sized dinosaur exhibits. The Science Center is made possible by contributions from community members, and parent reviews describe hands-on STEM/STEAM exhibits, live animals with knowledgeable staff, and activities such as fossil digs, the shadow wall, pneumatic tubes, building structures, games, and free play in the museum.
