About
Kids Cooking Classes introduces children to cooking through hands-on preparation of dishes. The program focuses on making cultural dishes that are described as fun and engaging for participants. Class size is limited to a small group for the health and safety of those attending, and a waitlist is kept if the class becomes full.
• Ages: 5–12 years old
• Schedule: Monthly kids cooking classes are held on Sundays
• Price: JASC Members $55 Per Class; Non Members $65 Per Class
Class fees, which may vary with the food being prepared, cover the cost of all materials and ingredients. The April Cooking Class is now full and registration is closed.
Kids Cooking Classes is offered by the Japanese American Service Committee (JASC), which was founded in 1946. JASC was founded to serve the needs of Japanese immigrants and their American-born children coming to Chicago after leaving the World War II incarceration camps. Over time, JASC has built the Heiwa Terrace Retirement Community and the Keiro Long Term Care Facility and has instituted a number of individual services and activities for both children and adults. JASC serves a wider and diverse group of Chicagoans beyond the Japanese American community.
JASC states that, as the community continues to grow and change culturally, ethnically and socioeconomically, it has an everlasting duty to adapt and change to better serve and improve the physical, emotional, and social well-being of the community. JASC provides community services to people of all ages, ethnicities and economic means and works to archive the history of the Japanese American experience in Chicago through the JASC Legacy Center. JASC is partnering with the Field Museum for an Educator Symposium and is hosting its second Repair Day in the lower level of its building in collaboration with CapTel Captioned Telephone, Geo Allen Shoes & CGM, and Mark Drug Medical Supply.
