MVP Sports-Based Youth Development Programs offers organized sports that include baseball and softball, along with sports training, competitive participation, coaching, mentoring, and tutoring. The program includes organized youth baseball as a specific focus within its activities. MVP Winter Clinic is the first phase of the program and is part of these sports-based activities.
• Ages: 4–14 years old
• Schedule: Winter Clinic is the first phase of the program, typically held every January through March each year.
• Price: Donations start from $25 USD.
The organization behind MVP Sports-Based Youth Development Programs was founded in 2009 by LaVonte Stewart, an area resident. Its mission is to provide sports-based youth development to help boys and girls in Chicago’s under-resourced neighborhoods develop confidence, resilience, and life skills. The program currently serves youths ages 4–24 from the Chicago South Shore neighborhood, and in the fall of 2019 it added two additional baseball teams for boys ages 12–14 in the predominantly Hispanic, low-income neighborhoods of Pilsen and Humboldt Park.
The program uses a sports-based youth development model to reduce youth violence and includes youth violence prevention as part of its focus. It offers high-intensity mentoring, intervention, and social entrepreneurship activities, and targets at-risk youth, specifically those who have trouble with academic performance or behavior in and out of school. It provides instruction, training, and the competition of organized baseball and softball to youths who are not as likely exposed to the game and its disciplines.
Testimonials shared by the program include: “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.” Another testimonial states, “Baseball was, is, and always will be the best game in the world.” A third testimonial says, “Adversity shakes the foundation of our character to see if what we believe and value is really worth standing for.”
