About
MVP Sports-Based Youth Development Programs includes organized sports such as baseball and softball, along with organized youth baseball. The program also offers specific activities like the MVP Winter Clinic and MVP Fall Ball. In addition to sports, the program includes coaching, mentoring, and tutoring.
• Ages: 4–24 years old
• Schedule: MVP Winter Clinic is typically held every January through March each year
• Price: Donations start from $25 USD.
The organization was founded in 2009 by LaVonte Stewart, an area resident. Its mission is to provide sports-based youth development to help boys and girls in Chicago’s under-resourced neighborhoods develop confidence, resilience, and life skills. The program currently serves youths ages 4–24 from the Chicago South Shore neighborhood, and in the fall of 2019 it added two additional baseball teams for boys ages 12–14 based in the predominantly Hispanic, low-income neighborhoods of Pilsen and Humboldt Park. The program uses a sports-based youth development model that includes youth violence prevention, violence prevention, mentorship, sports engagement, and high-intensity mentoring, intervention, and social entrepreneurship activities. It targets at-risk youth who have trouble with academic performance or behavior in and out of school and provides instruction, training, and organized baseball and softball competition to youths who are not as likely exposed to the game and its disciplines.
