Summer Engineering Experience for Kids is a three-week summer program for rising 4th to 6th graders with virtual options only for 2026 at this time. It is a high demand program with required full three-week participation, and students who miss more than two days during the program will be withdrawn. Attendance is taken daily and monitored by program leaders, and there is a mandatory parent or guardian orientation. Student selection uses a rolling application and selection process with a waiting list and is based on criteria that include gender, age or grade, household income, prior participation, attendance records, sibling participation, NSBE Jr. membership status, membership with a NSBE partner organization, and additional funder or school district criteria. Homeschool students are eligible and encouraged to apply. Each Summer Engineering Experience for Kids site is sponsored by a company or organization.

The program is connected to NSBE’s mission “to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.” The program aims to provide high-quality learning opportunities to underrepresented students who may not have access to robust STEM education and was created to inspire Black students with the opportunities and wonder of the STEM field. Leadership and partner organizations listed for the program include Maurice Dantzler, Cummins Engineering Director: Cummins Emissions Solutions, Americas; Cummins Executive Sponsor for NSBE; Cummins Inc.; Ian Wilson, Amazon Web Service HR Vice President; Sandra Evers Manly, Northrop Grumman; The Boeing Company; and KiwiCo “Discover Stem.”
