• Ages: 0–18 years old
The program’s mission is to provide people with disabilities the opportunity for therapeutic interaction with horses, with the stated goal of increasing their self-esteem, dignity, and emotional well-being. Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center provides therapeutic horseback riding for children and adults with disabilities and describes its program uniqueness as lying on the back of the therapy horse. Riders learn horsemanship skills which, according to the program, stimulate physical, mental, and emotional growth.
The dream for Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center started on June 14, 2005, and on May 25, 2008, Dave and Kay Langenhorst launched the Pilot Season with four riders. Dave and Kay hosted the original Open House, and a Board of Directors made up of community members volunteers time, expertise, and enthusiasm. Chakota-TRC is described as a community-based human service organization, and the response from the local community to the initial Open House was described as overwhelming.
Chakota-TRC is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that depends on fundraisers, contributions, grants, and in-kind donations to operate. Volunteers assist in riding sessions, maintenance, and fundraising. The Chakota family has taken part in an enormous amount of training and workshops and has participated in several national conferences for PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International). Chakota-TRC actively works to follow PATH guidelines, and PATH has been in existence since 1969 and has set standards that most therapeutic riding centers try to operate their programs through. The program states that it maintains a standard of excellence in instructors, facilities, horses, equipment, volunteers, and staff.
