The program includes an off-season Jr. Bulldogs Academy and supports teams that participate in local tournaments. Families and community members can be involved through coaching, fundraising, sharing updates via social media, and volunteering behind the scenes.
• Ages: 8–12 years old
• Schedule: Jr. Bulldogs Academy is held on Sunday nights and, for 2023, runs from April 2 through the end of August
Highland Jr. Bulldogs Basketball (HJBB) is a non-profit organization that was originally launched as the Highland Shooters in 2015. Its mission is to offer a traveling basketball tryout opportunity for all interested 3rd–6th grade boys and girls residing in the CUSD #5 school district and to teach 3rd–6th grade youth the fundamentals of basketball in a supervised, organized, instructive, competitive and safety-oriented manner, with an emphasis on fun, teamwork, charity and sportsmanship, regardless of race, creed or national origin. Once teams are chosen, HJBB supports individual teams with insurance, uniforms, equipment, facilities and financial resources to participate in local tournaments and provides equipment, uniforms, insurance and qualified instruction at an affordable cost through fundraising efforts and corporate donations.
The Jr. Bulldogs Academy is an off-season program for CUSD #5 boys and girls interested in playing basketball and teaches 3rd–6th grade boys and girls fundamental basketball skills and team drills. The Academy is run by former and current Highland High School and Middle School coaches, former and current college and high school players, as well as volunteer HJBB coaches and basketball enthusiasts. Entering the 2023–2024 season, the program has over 100 kids on 13 different teams ranging from 3rd grade to 6th grade, supported by 30 committed volunteer coaches and board members.
As a non-profit organization, HJBB relies on donations and local corporate sponsors to help offset the cost of equipment, insurance, uniforms, tournament fees and more. There are multiple ways for adults to get involved, including serving as a board member, coaching, fundraising, sharing updates via social media, or volunteering time in other ways. According to founder Brett Pollard, having a unified traveling youth basketball program in Highland allows for an environment where coaches can collaborate and resources can be shared, and it gives kids the opportunity to feel like they are part of something all the way up through the high school level.
