Marion Soccer Inc Recreational & SIMSS Soccer Programs offers recreational soccer, league soccer, and tournament play, including events such as the Marion Whirlwind Cup, Marion Fall Soccer Spooktacular, and Marion Whirlwind Soccer Classic. The program also includes the SIMSS Southern Illinois Middle School Soccer (SIMSS) program, along with opportunities for coaching and refereeing within the league.
• Ages: 4–13 years old
• Schedule: Weeknight games are scheduled at 5:30 p.m. for Pre-K through 6th grade and 7:00 p.m. for 7th grade and up, with Saturday game times varying.
• Price: Pre-K registration is $40; registration is $50 for players Kindergarten through 6th Grade; SIMSS registration is $60; there is a $10 late fee for all late registrations.
For over 35 years, Marion Soccer has offered a family friendly, youth oriented, recreational soccer program. Marion Soccer, Inc. is a non-profit organization registered with the state of Illinois and IRS and is operated and managed by a volunteer Board of Directors, with no paid staff. Many Board members are former players and typically coach one or multiple teams within the league in all age groups each season.
The program’s mission is for the Marion Soccer Inc. (MSI) Board of Directors to provide a model youth soccer program responsible for the promotion and development of the game of soccer in the greater Marion, Illinois area, valuing families, players, coaches, referees and sponsors, and striving to foster self-improvement by encouraging commitment, teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership through education, providing safe and positive social interaction, demonstrating respect, loyalty, integrity, and forming relationships where all participants have a true sense of ownership to the sport, and spirit, of soccer.
MSI hosts two annual tournaments, the Marion Whirlwind Soccer Classic in the spring and the Marion Fall Soccer Spooktacular in the fall, with as many as 1500 parents, coaches and players participating from around the region. MSI is the only organization in the local tri-state area that pays for its All-Star teams to play in a minimum of two tournaments each season and for the All-Star uniforms. Every player receives a jersey or shirt in the fall that is used for both fall and spring seasons, and newly registered players in the spring are also provided a jersey or shirt.
Recreational soccer is available to all players between Pre-K and 6th Grade, and SIMSS Southern Illinois Middle School Soccer (SIMSS) is offered for 5th through 8th grade players. MSI is open to all children from Pre-K to 8th Grade based on age as of January 1st of that year, and players in 7th and 8th grade play in the SIMSS soccer program, which practices as a group representing Marion and plays other middle school aged teams from towns in the Southern Illinois area.
MSI gives every coach a Coach's Bag that includes soccer balls, training cones, pinnies, a goalie shirt and gloves. MSI pays referees for every game and covers costs such as electric bills for the soccer fields, office and concession stands, soccer nets, flags, referees' whistles and uniforms, other miscellaneous items, and accounting firm fees for annual Federal and State non-profit tax filing. MSI carries insurance to ensure coverage if a child is hurt.
Every child needs to have a pair of shin guards and soccer cleats or the referees will not let them take the field. Kids must have cleats designed for soccer, which do not have a single cleat at the very front tip, because gym shoes or sneakers are very slippery on grass or turf and a child can easily twist or break an ankle, while cleats provide the grip needed to help reduce accidents.
The program shares testimonials that highlight effort, attitude, and responding to challenges from well-known soccer and football figures, including Ted Lasso, Alex Morgan, and Pelé.
