• Schedule: Office open Monday–Friday, 8am–4pm
Oblong Children's Christian Home states its mission as glorifying God by providing loving, family-style homes that help at-risk youth grow in faith, character, and purpose. It is a ministry of the Christian Church and Churches of Christ to abused and troubled children who are 5 to 16 years old, and it notes that children are not turned away because of race, faith, creed, or family financial condition. The home operates Christ-centered, family-style homes with separate homes for boys and girls, where experienced houseparents live on campus and guide youth in everyday life, and every aspect of care is rooted in Scripture and prayer. New Life Academy, the on-campus private school, supports both academic and spiritual development and is used to help with individualized development.
Oblong Children's Christian Home has been raising up children since 1969 and reports that for over 50 years it has provided family-style homes and partnered with families, churches, and communities. In 1970 the first child came to live in the farm home, and in 1974 a tri-level home was built to house the children. From 1998 to 2006 the programs expanded, including the 1999 construction of the Talitha Koum Home as a girls’ home, the 2001 volunteer-built Our Father’s House as a boys’ home, and the 2004 volunteer-built Zion home, which housed girls and later became a boys’ home in 2006. In 2010 New Life Academy, the on-campus school, was started, followed by the 2012 construction of the Red McCoy indoor riding arena and a new school building for New Life Academy, and in 2017 a Welcome Center wing was added to the school building. The organization notes that in 2025 the Talitha Koum became the Carpenters house.
The Oblong Children’s Christian Home is DCFS certified and licensed. It states core values of forgiveness, respect, service, obedience, thankfulness, love, work, and honesty. The ministry reports that it receives no state funds and that funds from churches and individuals have expanded the facilities, and that its work depends on the partnership of individuals, families, and churches. One former resident, Ophelio, describes the home as a place where they felt loved, learned new things and new experiences, and says the children’s home was a home to them and that the people there “go above and beyond” and “give chance after chance.”
