About
Palos Baseball Organization offers a recreational or “in-house” baseball program, a travel program, coach’s clinics, coach development programs, an annual all-star game, and an Annual Picnic called Diamond Days. Over 500 kids participate each season on approximately 46 teams, and each team has the opportunity to play a night game under the lights. All divisions use a continuous batting order and free substitution rule (except for the pitcher position), and all scores and standings are recorded on the website.
• Ages: 5–15 years old
• Schedule: Games run from mid April to around July 1, with a 14–16 game schedule and 1–2 practices per week
Palos Baseball is a 60-year-old organization and a non-profit group made up entirely of volunteers. The recreational or “in-house” program is available to any individual between the ages of 7 and 14 who wishes to participate, and it is described as the core reason for the organization’s existence. Divisions and age limits are: Shetland for Pre-K and Kindergarten (5–6 years old), Pinto for 1st and 2nd graders (7–8 years old), Mustang for 3rd and 4th graders (9–10 years old), Bronco for 5th and 6th graders (11–12 years old), and Pony for 7th, 8th and 9th graders (13–15 years old). Ninth graders are eligible for Pony as long as they do not play for their high school team, and if they make their high school team their registration fee is refundable in full. At the conclusion of the regular season, all teams enter a bracketed single-elimination playoff, and near the end of the season each team selects 3–4 players to represent them in the annual all-star game.
The program is paid for by registration fees and fundraising efforts including a concession stand, corporate sponsors, a travel tournament, and individual donations, and it is not funded in any way by the city of Palos Heights. Uniforms are provided as part of the registration fee and include baseball pants, a t-shirt, hat, and socks, and managers receive an equipment bag with batting helmets and catcher’s gear, while each player provides their own glove and bat. Games are scheduled on weekdays (except Wednesdays) at 5:30 pm and on Saturdays from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm, with occasional night games starting at 7:30 pm, and in-house games are not played on Sundays except for make-up games on Sunday afternoons when possible. Typically, teams have 1–2 practices per week. Each year there is a picnic (Diamond Days) held on a Saturday in mid June with games for kids of all ages, and Palos Baseball Organization, together with Palos Power Girls Softball, holds a picnic for players and their families each year.
The Board of Trustees includes an Executive Committee of five officers (president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary, and sergeant at arms) and trustees who run all aspects of the program. The organization also has an advisory board made up of the head coaches for several local high school baseball teams.
