Mounted Angels Therapeutic Horsemanship is a non-profit organization that was started in 1989. Mounted Angels has no paid employees and relies solely on donations and volunteers for all activities, and all horses for the program are provided by volunteers at their owner's expense. Mounted Angels is a Spirit Horse member center, and Judy and Dennis Douglas are both trained instructors with Spirit Horse. The instructors and volunteers attend training throughout the year to stay current in the field of therapeutic riding. The current Board of Directors includes Judy and Dennis Douglas, Sara and Bobby Gresham, and Lanny and Darla Lemons, and Martha Sheppard serves as the coordinator and assists with lessons. Mounted Angels was started when Judy Schlieper worked at the Pike County Health Department and was required to do a project to complete her degree in nursing. Through community support and volunteers, it is the program’s stated goal to provide therapy to any child in need in the Western Illinois area and beyond. The Pike County Fair Board provides their facilities at Pleasant Hill at no charge.
