About

The Dancenter offers classes in ballet, tap, jazz, baton, hip hop, lyrical, tumbling, contemporary, musical theater, and pointe. Students can take part in both performance company and competition team options as part of their dance training.

The Dancenter’s Artistic Director, owner, and instructor is Miss Anita, who is celebrating her 50th year of teaching and has studied tap privately with Marjorie Sellers in Zanesville, Ohio, as well as ballet, jazz, and baton, and has attended intensives and seminars to further her education. Some of her former students have danced with the San Francisco Ballet, are professors at Illinois State University, have danced at various theme parks, and teach at studios across the country. Assistant Artistic Director and instructor Miss Becky has a degree in Early Childhood from Lincoln Christian University, has taught at studios in Ottawa and Bloomington, given master classes in Chicago and Springfield, worked with many local high school and college dance teams, choreographed for Engle Lane and Vermillion Players, and taught for many special events in the area. She also works for the Illinois Valley Brain Injury Clubhouse helping adults with traumatic brain injuries and has taught hip hop classes in the Dominican Republic. Instructor Miss Shannon began dancing at the Streator Dancenter at age 4, trained for 14 years in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, and tumbling, assisted teaching for 4 years, and was part of the Dancenter Performance Company for 6 years and Competition Team for 2 years; she later joined EIU Dancers at Eastern Illinois University, choreographing jazz, hip hop, lyrical, and tap dances, and has choreographed for Engle Lane Theater and Vermillion Players. Instructor Miss Abbey started dancing at age 3 and at the Pontiac Dancenter at age 8, has trained in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, musical theater, and pointe, was in the Performance Company and competition team for 6 years, assisted in classes in high school, and worked with the competition team for the past two years; she attended Illinois State University as a middle level education major and was a member of the Illinois State competitive Dance Team, which placed in the top 10 at NDA Nationals in Daytona Beach, FL, in 2018. Instructor Miss Anya started dancing at the Dancenter at age 10 in jazz, tap, musical theater, hip hop, and lyrical, participated in company for a couple of years and competition for 5 years, danced in two shows with Vermillion Players, later completed a trade school certification in cosmetology, assisted with dance classes in Springfield, and completed a three‑month dance certificate program in Los Angeles where she took classes from professional dancers. Instructor Miss Lindsay is a Bloomington Normal native who trained at several Central Illinois studios, including years on competition teams and as a class assistant, and after high school minored in Dance at Millikin University, participating in fine arts and theater programs and the university dance team; she has studied ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, musical theater, hip hop, pointe, and contemporary, works as a professional photographer, and volunteers with her church’s youth group. Instructor Miss Hailey has been dancing at the Dancenter since age 4, taking tap, jazz, musical theater, hip hop, ballet, lyrical, contemporary, and pointe, was on the company team, joined the competition team around age 9 and is still dancing with the competition team, graduated high school early in January 2023, and has experience as a student teacher with younger children at the Dancenter. The Dancenter states that it offers complete training for recreational to competitive students in a fun environment and aims to share a passion for dance with students and see them grow.
