About

Chicago Voyagers Outdoor Adventure Programs offers outdoor activities such as mountain biking, cycling, canoeing, hiking, cross-country skiing, rock climbing, river trips, and camping. The program uses these outdoor adventure activities as part of its adventure therapy approach for youth.

• Ages: 13–18 years old

Chicago Voyagers’ mission is to empower youth through adventure therapy programs that foster healthy relationships and skills for life success. The organization focuses its services on youth who have experienced trauma and adversity, with an intentional focus on underserved towns and neighborhoods. Chicago Voyagers provides experiential, relationship-based outdoor adventure programming year-round and bases its work on a belief in the healing power of the outdoors. Participation in the program has grown 30% every year, and reported participant outcomes include 86% growing in responsible behavior, 89% improving their teamwork and leadership skills, 90% developing confidence and a sense of empowerment, 90% of youth coming from low-income households, and 98% of participants being youth of color.

Chicago Voyagers is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization. It is proud to partner with the League of American Bicyclists in their mission to foster a bicycle-friendly America that improves lives and strengthens communities, and it works with local program partners to provide its outdoor adventure programming. The organization’s history traces back to Trips for Kids, which began as a pilot mountain biking program in 1986 in San Rafael, California, became a non-profit in 1988, expanded to the Midwest in 2002 with a Fox Valley chapter, and led to the formation of Chicago Voyagers as an affiliate six years later. In 2008, Chicago Voyagers sponsored the local Trips for Kids chapter, moved it to Chicago, and renamed it, and in 2023 Trips for Kids was acquired by the League of American Bicyclists. One testimonial from Jorge de Leon of the Addison Trail High School CIMA program states that Chicago Voyagers helps their youth in a tremendous way and that programs such as this encourage youth to step out of their comfort zone, try something new, appreciate nature, appreciate what they have, and interact with other youth in a healthy and encouraging manner.
