Healing Horse Stables is a non-profit organization that offers therapeutic riding, equine facilitated learning, and riding for relaxation, and it serves people with various mental and physical disabilities. The program also serves as a rescue and shelter for horses in need. Its mission is to promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social well-being of both riders and horses alike. The program is underpinned with a great deal of prayer while not being overtly religious, and riders, staff, and volunteers are often invited to form a circle, hold hands, and set an intention or pray for safety, healing, and fun while they are with the horses. Horses in the program provide a judgment-free, caring, and responsive presence through nonverbal feedback and are described as partners in the healing endeavor, mirroring the emotions and energy of the people working with them. Activities at Healing Horse Stables offer an opportunity to improve physical skills including range of motion and flexibility and mental and emotional well-being, and they form a positive and supportive community with riders, volunteers, and horses.

In the fall of 2015, Larissa started as a volunteer for co-founders Dorey and Terry and eventually took over the charity in September 2021. The leadership team includes Larissa Bokan as Head of Operations, Annette Bokan as Riding Instructor, founder Dorey Riegel, and co-founder Terry. Larissa completed a doctorate of veterinary medicine, and Annette has been in the horse industry for over 30 years specializing in hunter jumpers. Community volunteers have included junior and senior high students, college students, and senior citizens, including some from Westminster Presbyterian Church’s neighborhood outreach, Teen Hangout.

Riding Instructor Annette Bokan tells riders, “this is your ride not mine.” Founder Dorey Riegel describes having studied nursing and religion, having a deep faith, and believing that the therapeutic riding program is underpinned with a great deal of prayer. Dorey explains that being with horses, handling, grooming, and riding them helps people slow down and become mindful of how they are in the moment, and that horses are spiritual, energetically sensitive, emotionally responsive creatures that mirror back emotions such as anger, tension, anxiety, or calmness.
