Bloomington Parks and Recreation partners with 21st Century Community Learning Centers and MCCSC School Age Care to bring Banneker Afterschool Program to students in grades K–6. The Banneker Community Center has been involved in food access efforts since it began serving as an Indiana Summer Food Service Program site in 2006, and it joined the Monroe County Community School Corporation and Community Kitchen in offering sites where children out of school for the summer could get a free, nutritious meal. In 2020, the National Recreation and Park Association, in cooperation with the Walmart Foundation, awarded the Banneker Community Center an $80,000 “Parks as Community Nutrition Hubs: Expanding Access to Healthy Food” grant, which supported staffing, supplies, materials, and labor to develop a raised bed garden program. The backyard garden met the qualification to be called an urban farm and was named the Benjamin Banneker Urban Farm, which serves as a learning site and source of healthy food for children who attended Banneker Camp. The Board of Park Commissioners approved the request to name this garden area the Benjamin Banneker Urban Farm at its January 24, 2023 meeting. The program has reached the maximum number of participants for the 2025–26 Banneker Afterschool Program, and a wait list is available. Leadership for the program includes Erin Freese-Posthuma, Title Program Specialist, and Kevin Terrell, Title Program/Facility Coordinator.
