British Swim School was founded in Manchester, England in 1981, expanded to North America in 1991, and its instructional program has been in use for over 40 years. The program states that every swimmer deserves to feel confident, capable, and safe in the water, no matter their age or experience level, and that it uses proven teaching methods and a gentle, confidence-building approach in its swim lessons. It also states that it offers lessons for all ages, including specialized programs for young adults, adults, and individuals with special abilities.

The program features a survival-first approach, highly-trained instructors, a goal-oriented program, small group sizes, fun and gentle methods, and year-round enrollment. All survival classes, including adults, are conducted in small groups with a maximum 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio, and Tadpole and Stroke Development classes have a maximum 6:1 student-to-instructor ratio. The facility is described as clean and well-maintained, with a comfortably heated pool, private changing facilities, and a family-friendly environment. Enrollment does not use fixed sessions, so families can start at any time, and students can move up to the next level as soon as they are ready.

One parent, Hudson P., reports that the program has helped their son build water confidence in what they describe as a safe, supportive environment and says the instruction is excellent. Another parent, Ravikant S., states that their son, wife, and they all learned to swim and are now completely comfortable in the water, and that the program works for every age and skill level. Other parents, including Owen E., Nainika C., Lainey T., and Liam S., describe small class sizes, patient and engaging instructors, a focus on safety, and a blend of fun with structure, and one parent calls it more than lessons and a life skill.
