FIRST LEGO League

FIRST LEGO League gives kids hands-on STEM experiences that include coding, engineering, research, and a robot game. The program uses themed challenges to guide students through playful discovery and real-world problem-solving. Teams build and program LEGO Education SPIKE or SPIKE Prime robots to complete missions in the robot game and create unique solutions with LEGO bricks.

FIRST LEGO League states that its mission is to spark curiosity and confidence in young minds through hands-on STEM experiences. It is described as a global STEM program for young minds, with age-appropriate divisions that build upon each other and are designed for ages 5 to 16, with age ranges that vary by region. The FIRST LEGO League Explore division is for ages 6–10, and the FIRST LEGO League Challenge division is for ages 9–16.

In the Explore division, teams focus on the fundamentals of engineering, learn to design and code, and create unique solutions made with LEGO bricks and powered by LEGO Education SPIKE. In the Challenge division, teams engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering, and they build and program a LEGO Education SPIKE Prime robot that navigates the missions of a robot game. Challenge teams also participate in a research project to identify and solve a relevant real-world problem.

FIRST LEGO League guides youth through STEM learning and exploration at an early age. Students around the world come together to take on themed challenges and connect at high-energy local and global events that celebrate creativity, collaboration, and innovation. The program states that students gain productive learning habits, confidence, and teamwork skills.
