About

Head Start / Early Head Start offers education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement activities in a center-based setting. The program also connects families with community support services, special services to preschool children with recognized disabilities, childcare assistance, utilities assistance, health insurance assistance, medical and dental care assistance, and access to early intervention services. Families can take part in parent meetings, volunteer opportunities, and training opportunities.

• Price: Head Start affords families a holistic preschool program at no cost. Human Services, Inc.’s Head Start Program provides FREE early childhood services. Families can receive assistance with childcare, utilities, health insurance, medical and dental care, access to early intervention services, and more at no cost.

Human Services, Inc. began in 1965 as BBJ – Community Action Program, and in 1973 the agency became Human Services, Inc. Its mission is “Bridging the gap to stability through coaching, education and partnerships.” Human Services, Inc., a Community Action Agency, maintains services throughout South Central Indiana and offers a variety of assistance to families and individuals in need. Human Services, Inc.’s Head Start Program provides free early childhood services in Bartholomew, Decatur, Jackson, and Johnson Counties to children 3 to 5 years old and their families. These initiatives created the opportunity to build community partnerships and collaborations for the purpose of reducing barriers to a population.

Head Start is a federal grant funded early childhood education program that follows Head Start Performance Standards as well as Indiana licensing regulations. Program services are described as comprehensive for low-income children ages 3 through 5 and their families, and services are offered to families who have incomes below the federal poverty level. Program services are described as responsive to each child and family’s ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage. Head Start emphasizes the role of parents as their child’s first and most important teacher and provides quality early childhood education and social-emotional support. Head Start programs provide a learning environment that supports children’s growth in language and literacy, cognition and general knowledge, physical development and health, social and emotional development, and approaches to learning. To enroll, a birth certificate, shot records, ID for the parent, and a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) are required, and an appointment is required.
