About

Japanese Taiko Drumming introduces participants to Japanese Taiko drumming using large drums, body movement, vocalization, and various instruments. Classes include learning about rhythm and drumming through games, songs, dance, and drumming. All drums are provided, and no drumming experience is necessary.

• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Weekly Wednesday classes in late fall, winter, late winter, and early spring sessions
• Price: Children’s Late Fall / Early Winter: $70; Children’s Winter: $50; Children’s Late Winter: $70; Teens/Adults Late Fall / Early Winter: $75; Teens/Adults Winter: $50; Teens/Adults Late Winter: $50; Teens/Adults Early Spring: $50; Silver/Parkinson’s Late Fall / Early Winter: $75; Silver/Parkinson’s Winter: $50; Silver/Parkinson’s Late Winter: $50; Silver/Parkinson’s Early Spring: $50; drumsticks $15 on the first day of class

For children ages 8–11, the class meets on Wednesdays from 3:00–3:45pm. For teens and adults ages 12 and older, the class meets on Wednesdays from 6:00–7:00pm. For adults ages 18 and older in the Silver/Parkinson’s group, the class meets on Wednesdays from 4:00–5:00pm.

Late Fall / Early Winter sessions run November 6 to December 18 with no class on November 27. Winter sessions run January 8 to 29. Late Winter sessions run February 5 to March 12, with a separate Late Winter Silver/Parkinson’s session from February 2 to 26. Early Spring sessions run March 5 to 26.

Japanese Taiko drumming has been played in Japan for over 2000 years, and the word taiko means big drum. Columbus Parks and Recreation offers the Japanese Taiko Drumming program. The Silver/Parkinson’s class is for persons with Parkinson’s and their care partners or families and is intended for anyone who would like to try taiko at a relaxed pace with modified movements. The Silver/Parkinson’s program will promote communication, allow for shared activity, provide emotional support, and encourage physical activity.
