About
Japanese Taiko Drumming introduces participants to Japanese Taiko drumming using large drums, body movement, vocalization, and various instruments. Classes focus on learning about rhythm and drumming through games, songs, dance, and drumming. All drums are provided, and students are required to buy their own drumsticks for $15 on the first day of class.
• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Weekly Wednesday classes with separate times for children ages 8–11 from 3–3:45pm, teens/adults ages 12+ from 6–7pm, and Silver/Parkinson’s ages 18+ from 4–5pm, offered in Late Fall/Early Winter, Winter, Late Winter, and Early Spring sessions. Late Fall/Early Winter sessions run from November 6–December 18 with no class on November 27; Winter sessions run from January 8–29; Late Winter sessions run from February 5–March 12 (Children’s), February 5–26 (Teens/Adults), and February 2–26 (Silver/Parkinson’s); Early Spring sessions run from March 5–26.
• Price: Children’s sessions range from $50–$70 per session; Teens/Adults sessions range from $50–$75 per session; Silver/Parkinson’s sessions range from $50–$75 per session. Students are required to buy their own drumsticks for $15 on the first day of class.
Japanese Taiko drumming has been played in Japan for over 2000 years, and the word taiko means big drum. The Silver/Parkinson’s class is designed for persons with Parkinson’s, their care partners and families, and anyone who would like to try taiko at a relaxed pace with modified movements. The Silver/Parkinson’s program will promote communication, allow for shared activity, provide emotional support, and encourage physical activity. Columbus Parks and Recreation partners with Southern Indiana Taiko to offer Japanese Taiko drumming classes.
