About

Nature Explorers Club offers activities such as playing in creeks, hiking, camping, gardening, biking, cooking, reading books, and unstructured, child-led outdoor play. Children and families spend time learning about nature, taking outdoor education classes, homeschooling in outdoor settings, exploring parks and playgrounds, trails and gardens, and making friends with trees, flowers, and birds.

• Ages: 0–10 years old
• Schedule: Class options on weekday mornings, weekday evenings, and Friday mornings, plus Saturday mornings

The program’s stated mission is to connect, inspire, and empower families with knowledge and appreciation of their natural world. Leadership includes class leaders in multiple Indiana communities, including Breanna and Maranda in Columbus, Andrea for a babies group in Columbus, Bre in Greenwood, Martinsville, and Trafalgar, Angela in Carmel, Laura in Zionsville, Whitley in Brown County, Morgan in Bloomington, and Audrey and Courtney in Indianapolis. Staff backgrounds include education, early childhood education, environmental science, ecology, environmental engineering, and environmental education programs at a national wildlife refuge, as well as involvement with the Indiana Native Plant Society and work toward Indiana Master Naturalist certification. The program is not a drop-and-go class, and parents are encouraged to engage alongside their children, with a focus on connecting with nature and with their child and an emphasis on unstructured, child-led outdoor play. Community involvement includes local Facebook groups for several Indiana areas and participation in and leadership of a local chapter of Free Forest School.

Parent feedback includes comments that Nature Explorers Club has become a weekly highlight, that children are excited to share what they learned, and that some families wished they had joined earlier. Parents describe the class as allowing the wonder of nature to inspire all ages, mention that the curriculum feels age appropriate and enjoyable for grown-ups, and say that lessons from nature club continue at home during the week. Other parents note that their children enjoy spending time with other kids and families, experiencing freedom and joy in nature, and that there is active conversation among parents about leaves, worms, puddles, and spider webs. Families also mention a balance of structure and exploration, ways that children let nature teach them, and building friendships and connections with other families.
