The Salvation Army camp counselors are equipped to help children navigate the complicated emotions and struggles that can arise for those who experience poverty and related hardships, and they are trained to recognize the effects of the stressors of poverty on children and respond to a child’s emotional needs so kids feel safe, included, and welcome. The Salvation Army states that summer camp for children can have a positive impact on a child's self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being, and that summer camp programs provide a safe, structured, and positive environment, keeping kids of all skill levels active and engaged. Camp sessions are programmed with hands-on activities that spark curiosity and collaboration and foster education, and kids can learn to swim, play sports, make music, create arts and crafts, and participate in scouting under supervision by trained counselors. The Salvation Army notes that most summer camps accept state-provided child care subsidies, and scholarships are also available to help families offset the cost.

The Salvation Army describes its mission as being an international movement and an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church, with a message based on the Bible and a ministry motivated by the love of God, and a mission to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. The Salvation Army also serves local families through Kroc Community Centers and over 400 after-school programs nationwide, and offers community centers, summer camps and after-school programs for students of all ages, along with numerous music, art, and athletic programs for youth.
