About
Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana STEM Programs include school programs, public events, and volunteer opportunities. Students take part in hands-on experiences that use knowledge from the classroom, including time in a cutting-edge Mission Control room and a high-tech Space Station simulator. The 15,000-square-foot facility also includes a science lab, an early learning room, and the Robert H. Rivers Planetarium, and is one of only two Centers in the world with dual mission simulators.
• Schedule: Open Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.; Saturdays by appointment only
On February 1, 1999, the Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana opened as the 33rd Center in a global network, and for over 25 years it has welcomed more than 10,000 guests each year. The Center is the only Challenger Learning Center in the state of Indiana and is part of a global network that reaches hundreds of thousands of students every year. Its mission is to create an exciting and immersive learning environment that promotes continued exploration of Earth and space sciences through innovative programs and to foster long-term interest in science, technology, engineering, and math for learners of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. The vision for the Center began in 1996 with Crown Point teacher Lisa Austgen, with local support from astronaut Jerry Ross. The Center offers community-engaging public events and a variety of volunteer options for those completing class credit hours or looking to give back to the community. One teacher from Washington STEM Academy described it as one of their favorite field trips because it allows all of their students a hands-on experience using knowledge from the classroom.
