About
BU Soccer Camp offers soccer along with a variety of other activities, including swimming, games, movies, a talent show, and trivia games. On various days, younger campers have the option of a 40-minute swim at the HRC indoor pool, where the pool depth is 3 feet, 6 inches. When camp cannot be held outside due to bad weather, indoor activities such as movies, taped soccer games, a talent show, and trivia games are used instead.
• Ages: 5–14 years old
• Schedule: Camp hours are 9:00am–3:00pm Monday–Thursday and 9:00am–12:00pm Friday, with supervision for early drop-off starting at 8:00am and After-Care offered until 6:00pm Monday–Friday.
• Price: The cost of After-Care per day is $20, with additional siblings at $10 per day; there is a $20 discount per player with a team sign-up, a $20 LUNCH PASS for the camp week, and cancellation fees of $35 prior to April 1 and $75 after April 1, with no refunds 1 week prior to the start of camp or during the camp week.
Butler University offers camp facilities that are used during each camp session, and pick-up for After-Care is at Hinkle Fieldhouse – GATE 1. Campers choosing to swim need a swimsuit, towel, and a change of shoes for the walk to the pool, and campers may bring their own lunch. A Camp Snack Card is available to buy drinks and snacks at the concession stand, and a lunch pass option includes a pizza slice or Smucker’s Uncrustable PB and J, fresh fruit, fresh vegetable, a cookie or brownie, and juice. At camp check-in on Monday morning, parents should make the athletic trainer aware of any medicine or medical conditions their camper may have if necessary.
BU Soccer Camp is open to any and all entrants, limited only by number and age, grade level, and/or gender. The camp is designed for the beginner as well as the advanced player between the ages of 5–12, and elite sessions are offered for 8–14-year-old soccer players who play the majority of the year and participate on competitive teams. Campers are grouped by age, ability, and physical maturity, with re-grouping according to skill level if necessary. The program lists a coach-to-camp ratio and curriculum and notes that it fosters and promotes skill development, sportsmanship, and the enjoyment of living an active lifestyle.
The staff is described as unmatched in the quality of licensed and accredited staff. Elite campers spend the morning portion of camp training with the Butler University coaching staff and other top U.S. Soccer licensed coaches from around the country. Youth campers are coached by men’s and women’s college players from Butler University and other universities across the country, and a certified camp athletic trainer is present during all camp sessions. Tari St. John is listed as Co-Owner and has served as Co-Head Coach alongside Rob Alman for the past 10 years, and she has completed her 18th season with the Bulldogs.
The camp states two main goals: to provide each player with the tools to become a better player, and to provide such a positive camp experience that each player’s love for the game grows even more. In 2009, Coach St. John established a chapter of TOPSoccer, a community-based training program for athletes with intellectual, emotional, and/or physical disabilities, and in 2021 the United Soccer Coaches Association honored her with the Disability Allies Award of Excellence. The program describes itself as long-established market leaders and experts in their field, with a vast array of camp activities.
Parent feedback includes comments that campers “had a blast,” “learned new skills, new friendships, new memories,” and that families plan to return to camp. One parent described a camper earning a juggling tag after working to increase her juggling total, and another noted that BU Soccer Camp “exceeded our expectations” and mentioned plans to return with more teammates.
