About

Swim Lessons includes swimming lessons where participants can also swim laps, play basketball, and take an aerobics class. The program takes place at an indoor aquatic facility that has a leisure pool with a zero-depth entry to 3 feet in depth, a separate three-lane swimming pool that is 3 ½ to 6 feet in depth, and lap swimming available upon request and availability. The facility also features a water playhouse with a small slide, geysers, spray features, and a large water slide for people at least 48 inches tall.

• Ages: 3–15 years old
• Schedule: Open swim hours during the school year are on Saturdays from 11 am to 6 pm and Sundays from 12 pm to 6 pm, with swim team practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm
• Price: Indy Island Aquatic Center admissions are $6 for adults, $5 for children under 18, and free for children 2 and under; youth swim lessons (ages 5–15) are $49 and preschool swim lessons (ages 3–5) are $34

The facility includes an accessible ramp in the leisure pool and an accessibility chair in the lap pool, as well as family change areas and locker rooms with showers. Additional features at the same site include Wet Lands, Prairie Lands, a 0.75-mile trail, baseball fields, outdoor basketball courts, a community room with a kitchenette, and a concession stand. In 1994, the Warren Township Metropolitan School District worked with Indy Parks to merge properties to create Raymond Park Middle School and Indy Island Aquatic Center. Indy Parks states its mission as “To provide enriching experiences for all” and is part of Indy Parks and Recreation, which provides parks, greenspaces, trails, and recreation opportunities for Marion County residents and visitors. Indy Parks and Recreation reports that it collaborates with outside agencies, including the National Recreation and Park Association, the Indiana Park and Recreation Association, and the City of Indianapolis’ Racial Equity Core Team, to review best practices, identify training resources, and understand how other cities and agencies are addressing racial equity and DEI initiatives.
