About

The Dance Refinery Dance Program offers dance, gymnastics, tap dancing, tumbling, gladiators, adaptive dance, ballet classes, voice, private voice lessons, and acting lessons. The program includes both recreational and competitive options and teaches dance from toddlers to adults. It also offers boys-only program options listed as an interest on the contact form.

The Dance Refinery was established in 1976 and has been refining artistic passions for 50 years. Since 1976, it has provided an outlet for students to explore their passions. The program includes an Adaptive Dance Program geared toward people with disabilities. The Dance Refinery is described as Indianapolis’s Premier Dance School and Indiana’s largest dance and gymnastics facility and is a 501(c)(3). Historically, donations and financial contributions to The Dance Refinery have been used for tuition scholarships, guest choreography, and future education opportunities. At The Dance Refinery, the stated mission is for students to succeed as performers and as individuals, with instructors and staff striving to provide a fun, exciting learning environment every day.

The leadership team includes Executive Director Lynn Herrick; Dance Instructors Brianna Amspaugh, Stephanie Anderson, Breanna Davis, and Alexis Apers; Tumbling and Gladiator Instructor Collin Calhoun; Dance, Tumbling and Gladiator Instructor Kevin Carmichael; Dance and Tumbling Instructor Taylor Griffin; and Office Manager Alyssa (Friend) Farris. Lynn Herrick has over 45 years of teaching and performing experience, including ten years as a professional musical theater performer and choreographer, 26 years as a show choir choreographer, and 30 years of judging experience with various dance competitions and show choir organizations. Stephanie Anderson began ballet training in 1989, attended summer intensives including the San Francisco Ballet and the Washington Ballet, continued training at Indiana University, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Ballet in 2004, and she also holds a Master of Social Work and is an Indiana Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Kevin Carmichael holds a Kinesiology and Contemporary Dance degree from Indiana University, was a member of the Indiana University Coed Cheerleading Squad from 2007 to 2009, was named “Choreographer of the Year” in 2012 and 2013, has had choreography showcased at the Broadway Dance Center “AIM Invitational” at the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, served as National Choreographer and Assistant Director for the Algy Costumes Dance Fashion Show, and has performed as a backup dancer with C+C Music Factory at the 80s Explosion Concert in Staten Island. Breanna Davis is a Registered Dance/Movement Therapist and Dance Instructor with a Master’s in Dance/Movement Therapy. Alexis Apers holds a Bachelor of Arts in Dance Education from Oakland University and has taught instructional and competitive classes for over seven years. Taylor Griffin received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Management and Marketing from the University of Indianapolis.
