The Lafayette Family YMCA opened in 1889, and Purdue University’s Dr. Stanley Coulter was the first president of the local YMCA. The organization states that it has always put Christian principles into practice through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, and it emphasizes core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. The childcare program connected with the YMCA is described as a state-certified childcare program. The Lafayette Family YMCA notes that it offers community programs, volunteer opportunities, family events, and community outreach, and provides donation opportunities. Testimonials from participants describe the YMCA as a “very welcoming and non-judgmental place to achieve fitness goals,” say that “the daycare takes such good care of the babies,” note that “the staff have always been very friendly and helpful with anything we've needed,” and state that “the pool and all the facilities are a plus for the price you pay.”
