Black Box Theatre Company Youth Theatre Programs is led by Executive Director Tricia Acton and Artistic Director Brandy DeVol-Moss. The organization is a 501c3 nonprofit run by a board of directors who plan and fundraise to keep programs affordable and has never turned anyone away due to cost. Its mission is to provide a wide range of opportunities appropriate for children of all ages and abilities, and it offers inclusive theatre that works hard to make the theatre a safe place for students of all abilities in a warm and welcoming environment. Students from pre-K through high school can take part in stage productions throughout the year, and the programming is accessible to students from all socioeconomic backgrounds and covers a wide range of skills on and off the stage.

One student, Collin (age 11), describes Black Box as a place where the people are “super nice,” where he has learned, been challenged, discovered a love of singing and acting, and found a “home away from home.” Another student, Elise (age 10), says Black Box “means being able to be yourself in a safe space” and “creativity in its purest form.” Parent Jill shares that both of her children “found confidence at Black Box,” grew in singing, acting, and dancing, and learned how to audition and persevere. Parent Rachel reports being “thrilled with the experience,” noting that her children gained skills in acting, singing, and dancing and developed new friendships in an inclusive program where “every child feels valued and appreciated.” Parent Laura describes Black Box as “an amazing outlet” where her daughter has learned character development and blocking, enjoyed performing onstage and attending art and acting summer camps, and experienced “a caring environment where kids can grow at all ages.” Student Vivian (age 14) calls Black Box “home” and says directors, volunteers, and students have always welcomed her and let her share her thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Student Anna says “no matter what no one feels left out,” describes Black Box as “extremely inclusive” with “a place for every single person,” and notes that students learn theatre skills along with teamwork, public speaking, and self-confidence. Parent Amelia describes Black Box as “one-of-a-kind,” praises the variety of courses and the way teachers meet students at their skill level, and values that staff encourage vulnerability so students gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
