STEM NOLA has operated since 2013 as a 501c3 organization. It was founded by New Orleans native and former tenured Tulane University engineering professor Dr. Calvin Mackie. The leadership team includes Dr. Calvin Mackie, Founder and CEO of STEM NOLA | STEM Global Action, and Angèle McClain, Chief of Staff and Special Assistant to the CEO. The organization states that it is committed to exposing, inspiring, and engaging members of the community in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and to expanding high-quality STEM education and opportunities to all students regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or zip code.

STEM NOLA describes itself as a national leader in the design and delivery of STEM-based activities, programs, and events for K–12 students, families, and communities. Participants receive a unique interactive, hands-on learning experience through programs that are developed to be culturally and environmentally relevant and that are designed to help students obtain 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and community. The program focuses on under-served and under-resourced communities, offers an array of cost-free programs for students, and is committed to serving all children of the community regardless of socioeconomic status. STEM NOLA uses college students specializing in STEM-based studies and corporate volunteers as instructors and mentors.

Through a network of school-time and out-of-school programs, community-based groups, parent organizations, businesses, and STEM professional organizations, STEM NOLA works to identify common measures for high-quality STEM programs. In partnership with Boeing, STEM NOLA Rocket Day brought together more than 550 students, families, and volunteers, and with support from Boeing’s team at the Michoud Assembly Facility, students explored real-world STEM concepts. STEM NOLA and STEM Global Action state that they aim to make STEM accessible to all children, particularly those in under-resourced communities.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has named Dr. Calvin Mackie the 2025 recipient of the ASME Ralph Coats Roe Medal, described as one of the most distinguished honors in the field of engineering.
