About
Merrohawke Nature School offers Homeschool Days, Forest School, Field School, Forest Kindergarten, Summer Camp, and B.O.A.T. C.A.M.P. During the summer, children can attend summer camp in Boxford and B.O.A.T. C.A.M.P. in Newburyport. Summer programs take place ashore and on the water aboard the F/V Erica Lee.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: During the school year, upwards of 95 homeschooled children attend Forest School (ages 6–8) or Field School (ages 9–14) one or two days per week, September through May.
Forest Kindergarten is an all-outdoor, nature-based, Waldorf-inspired early childhood preschool serving children ages 2.9–5, and it is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care. Merrohawke Nature School is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that works 100% outdoors and runs on approximately 70% tuition and 30% charitable giving. During the summer, the program serves upwards of 475 Essex County area children, aged 3 to teens, who attend summer camp in Boxford and/or B.O.A.T. C.A.M.P. in Newburyport. Children and families served live across Essex and Middlesex counties, including Cape Ann and the lower Merrimack Valley. Merrohawke is a Full Member of the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America. Thanks to philanthropic supporters, no child who wished to attend but lacked the funds to do so has ever been turned away. Merrohawke does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, religious affiliation, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or family configuration. The mission of Merrohawke Nature School is to guide learning in nature that inspires empathy, resilience, grit, and a deep connection to the earth through direct experience on land and at sea. In case of emergency, the listed contact is Kate Yeomans at 978-888-7815. A quoted reflection shared by the program is from David Sobel: “If we want children to flourish, to become truly empowered, then let us allow them to love the earth before we ask them to save it. Perhaps this is what Thoreau had in mind when he said, ‘the more slowly trees grow at first, the sounder they are at the core, and I think the same is true of human beings.’”
