About
Ascendance Inner World Arts offers theater arts discovery weeks where participants learn a musical theater song, explore improv, and take part in prop and scenery making. The program includes a variety of dance styles such as Acro, Jazz Fusion, Hip Hop, Rhythm Stomp, and Contemporary, along with energetic choreography and two daily technique classes in various styles. Sessions feature imaginative art projects, hands-on projects, innovative challenges, and self-care and wellness practices, and families are invited to an informal showing or dance performance at the end of the week.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Half-day winter and summer camps and a technique and wellness week for pre-teens, with sessions running on set dates over several consecutive days
• Price: Page To Stage February Vacation Week program fee: $250, with a $50 deposit required to hold a spot
Ascendance Inner World Arts states its vision as “Know yourself, so you can be yourself.” The program is led by Founding Director Laurel Anne Boyd, with instruction from Singer/Songwriter Lauren Fleit, Musical Theater Educator/Dance Instructor Zazie Tobey, and dance instructors who are trained educators, artists, and performers. The organization describes its approach as a brand-new approach to learning movement, including an introduction to body-mind awareness, proprioceptive abilities, and imaginative impulse, and a focus on empowered response, described as choosing the next action consciously rather than reacting. It notes that special guests visit during the week to teach how to incorporate self-care and wellness practices into daily life, and that one camp blends Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math, and movement. Ascendance Inner World Arts states that it practices the “3 C’s”: Community, Connection, and Collaboration, and that it teaches classical technique while expecting and fostering discipline. The Meridian Performance Group is described as “not your average dance company,” with Meridian dancers stretching themselves to the peak of athleticism and emotional expression.
Ascendance Inner World Arts highlights programming from local small businesses in its summer and vacation offerings. It reports that TEAM AIWA raised $8700 for the Hot Chocolate Run for Safe Passage and thanks supporters of its Annual Community Donation Drive for Northampton Survival Center, Manna, It Takes A Village, and the Dunphy Toys For Tots Drive.
