• Price: Fees are based on DoD guidelines according to the Military Child Care Act of 1989.

The mission of Hanscom Air Force Base Child Development Center is to assist military and civilian personnel in balancing the demands of family life while accomplishing the Department of Defense mission. The facility is NAEYC accredited and subject to Department of Defense unannounced, monthly, and annual comprehensive health, safety, and fire inspections, as well as multidisciplinary inspections, and it meets rigid Air Force criteria. Parents are informed that the program maintains high staff-to-child ratios. Staff members have completed extensive background checks, and exacting training and testing standards mean staff are professionally responsible and held to a higher level of accountability than other programs.

The center offers quality and affordable services for eligible children ages 6 weeks to 5 years, with fees based on DoD guidelines according to the Military Child Care Act of 1989. It utilizes the Early Learning Matters curriculum, which is stated to meet each child’s developmental needs and prepare them for kindergarten. The program is currently operating at approximately 50% capacity and is actively hiring Child Care Assistants, with jobs open to the general public and no military affiliation required.

Hanscom Air Force Base Child Development Center is a proud partner of the United States Military and Department of Defense through the Fee Assistance and Respite Child Care Programs and is affiliated with Child Care Aware of America. The Military Child Care in Your Neighborhood fee assistance program is available for U.S. Military and U.S. Coast Guard families who cannot access installation-based child care due to distance or waitlists. The program is available to Air Force Active Duty, Air Force Reservists on Active Duty, Civilian Air Reserve Technicians, and Gold Star Spouses meeting specified conditions.

Families request care and enroll via the Military Child Care website (MilitaryChildCare.com), a Department of Defense website that provides information on worldwide military-operated and military-subsidized child care options, standardized daily operations, procedures for waiting lists, and placement of children into available programs. Under the supplanting policy, a child currently enrolled may be replaced by a child from a family in a higher priority category; impacted families receive a 45-day written notification and can reapply for care through MilitaryChildCare.com. Community feedback is collected through the Interactive Customer Evaluation (ICE) website.

Hanscom officials have held monthly virtual and in-person Town Hall Meetings since August 2022 to discuss the supplanting policy, its potential impact on families at the base, and to provide updates on staffing initiatives. The program also notes that families can help support military families by becoming a Family Child Care Provider and references “Helping Children Thrive” as part of its materials. Information and licensing connections are available via Mass.gov and the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care. The leadership contact listed for community child care is the Community Child Care Coordinator, Ms. Robin Morris.
