The mission of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell is to inspire and enable young people, especially those who need the Club most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. All young people ages 8–18 are welcome, and membership fees are kept low with many scholarships granted to support access. The low annual membership fee includes all programs, services, field trips and meals, and the Club offers healthy meals as part of its services. The Club provides an environment that meets members’ basic needs and supports their growth and education, and its vision is to end generational poverty in Lowell. The Club’s values are Teamwork, Commitment, Excellence, Integrity, and Fun. When Lowell Public Schools are closed, the Boys & Girls Club is also closed. The organization undertook a 2024–2027 Strategic Plan following a two-day retreat in spring 2023, and it is undergoing an expansion and renovation project called Believe & Become while remaining open during construction.
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell is governed by an 18-member Board of Directors. The Club is led by Executive Director Joseph C. Hungler, and the Executive Leadership Team includes Deputy Executive Director JuanCarlos Rivera, Director of Finance & Human Resources Caroline Howard, and Director of Philanthropy Marci DeCarli.
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit youth development organization and a dues-paying affiliate of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. It is a Member-Agency of United Way of Merrimack Bay, Inc. The Board of Directors and staff have adopted the Association for Fundraising Professionals’ Donor Bill of Rights and Code of Ethics with permission from AFP. Joe Hungler was honored as Champion of Community Action, and Kemigisa was named 2021 Youth of the Year.
The Club partners with Northern Bank, and Greater Lowell Tech students built a stage for the Club. Congresswoman Trahan announced a workforce development grant for the Club, and the Club participates in Massachusetts Boys & Girls Clubs’ “Blue Lights On” back-to-school initiative. Testimonials from people connected to the Club include comments about the people and can-do culture, the impact on a member’s future, and the idea that an investment in youth can change the outcome of a whole community.
