About

New Art Center Youth Art Programs are part of a non-profit community art education space that offers classes for children, teens, and adults at all skill levels. The programs are connected to a long-standing exhibition program that shows artwork by students, faculty, and local artists, and they are part of an organization that provides more than 400 classes each year and serves more than 3,200 students each year.

• Ages: 3–18 years old

The New Art Center is a community art education space which offers everyone, at all levels of ability, opportunities to make, exhibit, view, think about, and talk about art. It has organizational goals that prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion, positive mental health, and creating a safe, welcoming environment. It has youth leadership programs that build skills, confidence, and empower the next generation of artists, as well as art as therapy programs for teens. The organization also offers scholarships and tuition subsidies so that everyone can participate regardless of income level, and it has inclusive, multigenerational art education that includes inclusive art classes for adults with developmental delays and communication disabilities.

New Art has a Community Outreach program that provides free art experiences and Community Cultural Days that mark many holidays in its diverse community with free family art activities, music, and dance. It serves the greater Boston community with programs in its facility and beyond its walls, and it serves students from Boston, Brookline, Wellesley, Watertown, Waltham, Needham, Belmont, and other nearby communities. The New Art Center has a BIPOC curatorial program that highlights artwork by local Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, and the New Art Corridor hosts exhibitions year round and is open to visitors at all times. The organization’s main office hours are Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, and it generally follows Newton Public Schools for weather-related closures.

In December 1976, the City of Newton sold an unused 19th century church building to Newton Cultural Affairs, Inc. to develop a center for the performing and visual arts. The Newton Arts Center began programming in 1977, was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) institution in 1983, and changed its name to the New Art Center in Newton in 1994.
