About
School of Rock Northborough offers performance-based music education that includes weekly private music lessons, weekly group music lessons, one-on-one instruction, group rehearsals, band practices, songwriting exercises, lyrical workshops, recording original songs, and live performances. The program uses simplified rock songs for beginners, assigns songs and parts tailored to each student’s age, experience, and ability, and includes opportunities for students to perform at local Northborough music venues in front of a live audience. • Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Class and lesson options Monday–Thursday afternoons and evenings, Friday afternoons and early evenings, and Saturday mornings and afternoons
School of Rock Northborough offers the Little Wing program for ages 4–5, which uses classic rock songs, hand percussion, and other tools to learn about rhythm, song structure, melody, dynamics, rhythm patterns, and music syntax through play. The Rookies program for ages 6–7 uses simplified rock instruments to teach kids to play music. Rock 101 is offered for ages 8–13, and the Performance Program is offered for ages 8–18, both combining one-on-one instruction with group rehearsals. The Songwriting program is for ages 12 and over and includes songwriting, songwriting exercises, lyrical workshops, and recording original songs; it culminates in a live showcase where students perform their original compositions in bands at a local music venue, and students taking the Songwriting Program online remotely record their original songs to produce a demo of the class’s music. The Adult Program is for ages 18 and over and places every student in a band of fellow adults.

One parent, Yessim P., said that their kids love the program, that it is different from the music lessons that existed when they were a kid, that the kids are actually making music and learning to play as a band, and that the performances are impressive and watching the kids gain confidence and express themselves on stage is priceless. Another parent, Lori H. from Downington, PA, said that kids have a great time while learning to play, that lifelong skills and relationships are born there, and that the staff shares their passion for music and are professional and accommodating. Chevelle S. from Portland, OR, called it the best music program in the city, mentioned dedicated instructors and staff and a vibrant atmosphere, and said their 8-year-old has grown in skill and personal confidence. Dustie S. from Austin, TX, said the structure around how kids learn is amazing and that learning how to be part of a band is on another level, and described kids learning how to communicate, respect people and their opinions, and be accountable for themselves.
