About

Cub Scouts is a program where children take part in activities such as campouts, derby car races, hikes on the trail, service projects, Pinewood Derby®, Cub Scouting’s birthday party, and camping. Cub Scout activities are centered around earning badges and fun adventures that are specific to each grade, and completion of these adventures is how the aims of character, citizenship, leadership, and personal fitness are developed. Children are organized into specific groups called dens, which are organized by grade level and gender, and all of the dens in kindergarten through 5th grade make up the larger Pack, which also includes families in special events throughout the year.

• Ages: 5–17 years old

Cub Scouting is for boys and girls in kindergarten through 5th grade, and it is a grade-specific program that young people progress through as they grow older. Children meet in dens 2–3 times per month to do Cub Scouts’ age-appropriate adventure activities with others in their den. The Pack, including families, participates in special events throughout the year, including service projects, Pinewood Derby®, Cub Scouting’s birthday party, and camping. Cub Scouting operates through volunteer leadership, and parent involvement is an integral part of the Cub Scout program.

Scouting America, which operates Cub Scouts, is chartered by Congress to serve the nation’s youth by instilling the values of the Scout Oath and Law and is non-partisan. The mission of Scouting America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Scouting America welcomes all of America’s youth, including girls and young women, into its programs and aims to prepare young people for lives of impact and purpose. Scouting America is committed to creating a welcoming, safe environment where Scouts can freely express themselves, share their experiences, and become the best version of themselves by learning from and respecting each other, and safety is a value that must be taught and reinforced at every opportunity in Scouting. Scouting America provides a youth program of character development and values-based leadership training, and since its inception in 1910, more than 130 million young men and women have participated in Scouting America’s youth programs. Traditional Scouting programs are operated by local chartering organizations, such as religious institutions, clubs, civic associations, and educational organizations, which implement the Scouting program for youth within their communities.

Parents in the program have shared that Scouting has provided their child with a group of peers who care for and support them and that Scouting is a way of life and a way of having time with family to share good times and memories. They describe Scouting as a family-based program where a whole group of people nurture and support children and work together to make sure everyone is successful. Parents have also expressed that they want kids to have fun, care for one another, and understand what others might be going through in their lives, and that Scouting makes the most of the time they have with their children.
