Greenagers Youth Employment and Education Programs
April Hill Education and Conservation Center / April Hill Farm, 62 Undermountain Rd., South Egremont, MA 01258
About
Greenagers Youth Employment and Education Programs involve teens in work such as maintaining and building trails, removing invasive species, constructing kiosks and benches, and working in environmental conservation, sustainable farming, and natural resource management. Participants may work on trail crews that maintain existing trails and build new trail, including for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and other conservation organizations. Farm crew members work on the farm at April Hill, where they learn about regenerative agriculture and animal husbandry, and youth also install front-yard Front Lawn Food gardens for area families and glean produce for local food service agencies.
• Ages: 12–18 years old
Greenagers works to inspire children and young adults to develop deep connections to land, work, and community, and prepares youth for success in work and life by offering paid jobs and education in conservation, sustainable farming, and related trades. The organization offers paid employment programs, internships, apprenticeships, and education programs, and its Farm and Food Justice Team stewards April Hill Farm. Greenagers participants learn about community partnerships through collaborations with area nonprofits, businesses, and organizations that hire Greenagers and partner with its broader mission of youth and community engagement. Greenagers was formed in 2007 as a program of The Center for Peace through Culture and incorporated as Greenagers, Inc. on January 1, 2013, and it is a Berkshire United Way Funded Partner.
Trail crew members and alumni describe feeling accomplishment from placing stone steps on trails, completing challenging work, and contributing to projects that serve the community. One trail crew member noted learning that good work comes from inner motivation, and another described the work as exhausting but worthwhile because it accomplished something important to an entire community.
