About
Young Artists Programs are part of Berkshire Art Center, a nonprofit community art school that focuses on hands-on experience in the visual arts. The programs take place within a larger organization that offers classes, professional development, exhibitions, residencies, and events for all ages throughout the year. Young Artists Programs are connected to a community where art is described as for everyone, and where people of all ages, means, and skill levels are encouraged to engage with visual art.
Berkshire Art Center was founded in 1991 as a place where people who love art, regardless of age or ability, can gather to experience creative expression, and it changed its name to Berkshire Art Center in June 2022 on the celebration of its 31st anniversary. The organization is led by an executive director, program director, program and materials coordinator, ceramics staff, operations staff, and a board that includes faculty representatives and a founder. Its mission states that it is committed to creating an inclusive space that celebrates art in its many forms and the diverse community of artists in the region, and it continues to describe itself as a space for all regardless of age, skill level, background, economic status, or education. Berkshire Art Center partners with local schools and community organizations, and its Learning Through Arts program brings the studio art experience directly to K–12 students’ desks. According to the program director, staff members observe moments of discovery and creativity in children engaging with materials such as watercolor paint.
