Camp Kinderland was founded in 1923 by Jewish labor activists as a retreat for their children from the tenements of New York City. It is a multicultural summer camp and community that honors its progressive secular Jewish roots through a stated commitment to economic, racial, and social justice. Its mission describes Kinderland as an oasis for children ages 9 to 16, where summer programming and year-round activities integrate progressive values with arts, recreation, and activism in a compassionate and caring environment. The camp emphasizes child-centered values, community, respect and compassion, diversity, and a focus on social, economic, and racial justice, with a program focused on the labor movement and other progressive causes where campers encounter ideals of social justice and peace. Camp Kinderland also holds an annual Holocaust Memorial illustrated in a poster and a Camp Kinderland Reunion in New York City for families, alumni, current campers, and staff. The leadership team includes Cindy Zingher, Executive Director; Mike, Administrative Director; and Joey Perr, Development Director. Camp Kinderland honors and celebrates the International Brigades in Spain, anti-fascist efforts in the World War II era, economic reform, and the civil rights and anti-war movements.
