Hale Education Youth Programs and Summer Camps is part of a private nonprofit that is widely recognized for flagship camps, youth programs, family and community activities, school partnerships, and professional development opportunities. The organization offers more than a century of experience helping people learn, grow, and thrive in the outdoors and provides access to 1,200 acres of adventure with more than 20 miles of trails along forests, ponds, and meadows, as well as beaches and a challenge course. Regular events at Hale include equinox and solstice hikes, community beach days, and concerts, classes, and clinics, and the property is open for passive recreation daily according to Visitor Guidelines for current hours. Hale customizes and delivers adventures for schools, blends academic content with hands-on outdoor learning, and offers programs for all ages including Youth Leadership Development Programs and volunteer opportunities.

Hale’s mission states that it exists to unite people in diverse learning communities that build meaningful relationships, bridge connections to the natural world, and develop common goals. The organization is committed to making outdoor learning and recreation accessible to everyone through financial aid, focuses on closing the nature and opportunity gaps, and describes itself as a community of communities that welcomes a variety of ideas and interests. Its professional facilitators are described as passionate about helping people learn and lead.

Hale’s history dates back to 1918, when Robert Sever Hale first made the land available to scouts from Greater Boston communities, and the property was originally dubbed “Scoutland.” It later evolved into Hale Reservation, a center for outdoor education in the 1960s and ’70s, and continues reimagining learning through camps, academic partnerships, and its role as a community resource. Hale serves thousands of children, families, friends, and neighbors from more than 70 Greater Boston communities every year, and its long-standing partnerships with local organizations extend its impact.

One parent, Emily Marvel, says, “Taking my kids to Hale every day to participate in activities, make friends, and connect with nature is the best thing I can do as a mother and educator. It’s the perfect place—safe, welcoming, and beautiful—for children and adolescents to develop their independence and resilience.”
