Preschool Social Academy
Preschool Social Academy, 50 Cross St, Winchester, MA 1890
About
Preschool Social Academy includes outdoor learning and nature-based exploration, along with nature-based science lessons that use materials like flowers, herbs, and fresh petals. Children take part in clay activities, play with sensory balls, and explore mindfulness, self soothing, and regulation. The program also includes a CPR class and activities using a mortar and pestle for crushing petals.
• Ages: 2–5 years old
Preschool Social Academy has 5 classrooms and 5 teachers, and each teacher has at least a bachelor’s degree or more in early childhood or a related field. All PSA teachers are up to date on their Covid vaccines. The leadership team includes Miss Maria (Aberjona River), Miss Diana (Wedge Pond), and Miss Kimberly. In 2008, PSA had a single classroom and 4 students, and it has grown to 5 classes, 20 teachers, and over 100 students.
The program follows a child-centric philosophy based on the Reggio Emilia Approach and uses a “Hundred Languages” perspective, where children learn and express themselves through various “languages.” It is the only Reggio-inspired, full-day education program for preschoolers north of Boston and is also described as the only Reggio-inspired school north of Boston. PSA is not a day care center; it is a next step structured preschool program where Kindergarten readiness is at the forefront. Its curriculum is data-based using Boston-based research and combines developmentally appropriate practices, inquiry-based learning, and child-led education.
Preschool Social Academy states a mission of hiring highly quality and engaged teachers, maintaining a constantly evolving curriculum informed by research and data-driven insights that adapts to individual learning styles, and creating an engaging learning space with thoughtful materials. The program has a commitment to spending 30% of the day outdoors for children’s mental, physical, and emotional well being, and the school grounds are on the Tri-Community Greenway in a safe, secluded environment that allows for extensive nature-based exploration. Winchester’s historical Aberjona River runs parallel to the school and provides an immersive backdrop for nature-based science lessons.
PSA is a proud founding member of the Boston Area Reggio Inspired network and supports the Common Start Coalition. PSA teachers participate in the Town’s Trunk-or-Treat, the Woburn Parade, and the Veterans Day Parade. PSA has consistently been voted Number 1 by the families of Winchester for 6 years running. One parent testimonial notes that a child attended PSA from ages 3–5, starting in the morning program and transitioning to the afternoon program before Kindergarten, and highlights “so many great things to say about Miss Kimberly and her wonderful school,” with specific points that made the program stand out to that family.
