About

Children's School of Science offers hands-on science classes where students study topics such as Seashore Life, Nature Photography, Entomology, Marine Biology, Oceanography, Biological Illustration, Embryology, Herpetology, Botany, and Marine Electronics. Classes include frequent field trips, short walking trips, and a weekly driving field trip, where students collect material from varied habitats and then may set up, stock, and maintain aquaria and terraria with their collections. In photography classes, students develop films, and in other classes they may make detailed observations of favorite invertebrates on paper.

• Ages: 7–16 years old
• Schedule: 2026 Sessions: Session A June 29 – July 17; Session B July 20 – Aug 6

The Children’s School of Science encourages a love and appreciation of science through inquiry-based learning, with direct observation of nature central to its philosophy since its founding in 1913. Instruction is on a higher level than is usually possible for the students’ ages, in an informal but serious atmosphere where children come to the school because they want to learn, and there are, with few exceptions, no prerequisites, exams, homework, or credits. The school looks for teaching applicants with the highest academic qualifications, normally requiring a Bachelor of Science or Arts in a scientific specialty, while also considering applicants with alternative qualifications, and teachers are freed of many administrative details so they can devote themselves to teaching.

Students benefit from the renowned scientific institutions in Woods Hole and the living classroom created by the complex biology and geology of Cape Cod, and subjects of study arise from material collected on field trips in the area. Teachers are encouraged to attend evening lectures and meet with scientists working at various scientific institutions in Woods Hole, and synergies from these interactions contribute to the quality of the courses. The Children’s School of Science, Inc. does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, or national or ethnic origin in registering students, awarding aid, hiring staff, or administering its programs and activities. Registration for 2026 will open on Monday, February 9th at 8pm Eastern Time.
