For over 100 years, the people of Northeastern Maryland have developed world-changing technologies, and in 2023 the Discovery Center at Water’s Edge opened a Preview Center, with Phase II planned to open in 2025 and a fully scaled science center planned to open in 2028. The Discovery Center at Water’s Edge is led by the APG Centennial Celebration Association, a 501(c)(3) founded to support Aberdeen Proving Ground’s centennial celebration and to help replace the U.S. Army Ordnance Museum that was moved to Fort Lee, VA in 2011. The Discovery Center at Water’s Edge states that it leverages this brain trust for the benefit of the public, particularly students who must be STEM literate to succeed today, and that it will be a place where students of all ages experience, create, and play with science and technology, where new worlds are discovered and connections are made, with an important part of its mission being to provide free access to programs and resources for underserved communities.
The Discovery Center describes itself as a world-class science and technology center that will tell the stories of inventions developed at Aberdeen Proving Ground and serve as an anchor for the region’s STEM activities. It reports that K–12 students will interact with STEM programming that is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards. The Discovery Center enjoys support from organizations and numerous individual contributors, including many that supported the APG Centennial Celebration Association’s centennial effort and continue in their support of the Discovery Center, some making multi-year pledges. The Discovery Center’s Community STEM Resources page compiles and provides STEM resources and opportunities in the region, including links to Army Educational Outreach Program, U.S. Army DEVCOM C5ISR Center Student Programs, Coding and Robotics Academy, Harford Community College STEM opportunities, Harford County Public Library STEM Programs, Maryland STEM Festival, U.S. Naval Academy STEM Opportunities, RoboMasterminds, and TechBrick Education. The Discovery Center will feature science and technology speakers and events for the whole community, and its facilities will be available to community groups for events and programming. Discovery Center at Water’s Edge is a charitable organization under section 501(c)(3), and donations are generally tax deductible.
