Cabin John Brookmont Children's Program
Brookmont Community Church, 4000 Virginia Pl, Bethesda, MD 20816
About
Cabin John/Brookmont Children’s Program offers daily activities such as circle time, outdoor play, nature walks, arts and crafts, music, lunch, and snack time. Children also take part in periodic field trips, a weekly music and movement class, and additional outdoor play, games, or walks. Activities are led by up to three talented and experienced teachers in a relaxed, family-like environment, and the curriculum includes both structured and unstructured activities.
• Ages: 2–4 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, with half-day programming from 9:00AM–12:30PM and full-day programming from 9:00AM–3:30PM, plus an optional extended day until 5:00PM depending on enrollment
Cabin John/Brookmont Children’s Program was established by local parents in the early 1960s and originally started in Cabin John, Maryland, for families in which it was necessary for both parents to work. Since moving in September 1988 to its current location in the Brookmont neighborhood, it has evolved into an educational and recreational program for two-, three-, and four-year-old children from the broader local community. The program provides a warm and nurturing introduction to the classroom for up to 18 children and limits enrollment so that each child is known, loved, and encouraged to grow at his or her own pace.
The program is led by Director Dawn Page. Parents, teachers, and the community, through the Cabin John Citizen’s Association, worked to create an affordable, reliable, and positive alternative to baby-sitting. Although it is not a cooperative nursery school, parents are actively involved by driving for field trips, serving on the school board, coordinating fundraisers, and organizing semi-annual workdays, which helps them get to know one another, the children, and the teachers. The preschool serves families in the Bethesda, Cabin John, Glen Echo, and Palisades neighborhoods.
Cabin John/Brookmont Children’s Program typically follows the Montgomery County Public Schools calendar for school holidays and emergency closings. On regularly scheduled MCPS early dismissal days, the afternoon program continues as usual and dismisses at 3:30PM or 5:00PM, and if MCPS announces an emergency early dismissal due to inclement weather, the school day ends at 12:30PM and parents are notified. Children bring healthy lunches that are packed and sent from home.
