Chesapeake Arts Center Classes & Workshops offers ceramics, dance, music, theater, literature, visual arts, STEAM, cosplay, theatrical arts, and screen printing classes. The program includes instructional classes, workshops, after school programming, safety courses for woodworking and metal, and dance performances.
• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: Galleries and offices are open with class and program access on Monday–Thursday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday
• Price: Scholarships, free and reduced-price arts classes, pay-what-you-can MakerSpace family workshops, and other affordably priced offerings
The program takes place in a multi-disciplinary arts center that includes two theaters, two exhibit galleries, three ceramics studios, two dance studios, the Michael Stanley MakerSpace, a STEAM classroom, a ceramics lab, a music room, a computer lab, and multiple arts classrooms and gallery spaces. Approximately 150 affordable hands-on arts classes are offered each year, and the center serves approximately 70,000 visitors annually through arts experiences, including theater performances attended by more than 7,000 children under the age of eighteen each year. Exhibits in the galleries are free for artists to show work and free for the public to attend, with 15–20 exhibitions curated and mounted each year. For weather-related closings, Chesapeake Arts Center follows Anne Arundel County Public Schools emergency closing protocols, and classes or events are cancelled when the school system closes due to inclement weather.
The Chesapeake Arts Center MakerSpace was launched in the fall of 2017 and offers pay-what-you-can monthly family workshops, safety courses for woodworking and metal, and screen printing classes. The facility is the result of a $35 million renovation of Brooklyn Park High School. The center’s mission is to foster creativity, create connections, and inspire joy by delivering innovative and accessible arts and education programs.
Chesapeake Arts Center partners with regional arts organizations to present music, drama, and dance performances and supports area businesses, community groups, and schools in presenting offerings on its stages. Free and reduced-price arts classes are available throughout the year to qualifying residents in underserved areas of Brooklyn Park, Glen Burnie, and Severn through grants. The center presents offsite exhibits throughout the community and hosts two free signature events each year: an Open House in the spring and Arts in the Park in the fall. The organization relies on support from individuals, corporations, foundations, government agencies, and revenue from rentals, ticket sales, and tuition.
