Horizons of Kent and Queen Anne's is a six-week summer academic and enrichment program for under-resourced students in PreK through 8th grade. Students are transported to and from the program each day, and a healthy breakfast is provided. The program uses small group settings that are academically and culturally diverse, and the curriculum is student-centered and hands-on. Teachers tailor instruction to address individual challenges, and afternoons include water safety instruction, enrichment activities, and field trips. All students must qualify for the Free and Reduced Meals Program to enroll, and new students must be referred by their teacher or counselor to apply. Horizons encourages alumni in high school to return as paid Student Support Leaders serving as teachers’ assistants, and the program is centered around a new theme every summer.
Horizons of Kent and Queen Anne's is an affiliate of Horizons National and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The first Horizons program began in 1964 at New Canaan Country School in New Canaan, Connecticut, and Horizons National was formed in 1995, with Kent School in Chestertown, Maryland joining the Horizons Network that same year. The mission of Horizons is to reduce the summer learning loss, also known as the “summer slide,” that contributes to the achievement gap and cycle of poverty.
Horizons works with students and families, and guidance counselors at local elementary and middle schools identify students who would be good candidates for the program. Horizons has a rapport with each guidance counselor and reaches out to nonprofits and individuals in the community that align with the summer theme and add to the enrichment activities.
The leadership team includes board officers Kate Goodall Gray (President), Nancy Nunn (Vice President), and Jim Wright (Treasurer), along with members Michelle Johnson, John Lewis, Chris McClary, Nancy Mugele, Robert Thompson, and Isabel Hardesty. The staff leadership includes Emily Murphy (Executive Director), Vickie Anderson (Office Coordinator), Kristin O'Neil (Kent County Site Director), Patrick Hopkins (QAC Site Director), Cheryl Fracassi (Middle School Washington College Site Director), and Teresa Dellamura (Enrollment Director).
Current parents report that they value the academic reinforcement and social interaction their children receive, that their children retain learning skills for the school year, and that Horizons provides high-quality learning and enrichment experiences outside of the traditional school year that support academic achievement and healthy youth development.
