Baltimore Ballet School offers classes in ballet, modern, jazz, character, and tap. Classes are held in studios with true sprung wood floors and Harlequin Marley surfaces, and uniforms must be ordered at the office.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
Baltimore Ballet is celebrating 26 years in Baltimore, continuing a tradition of instruction for all ages and professional performances, including an annual sold-out production of The Nutcracker and spring productions featuring world renowned dancers, aspiring pre-professionals, and children who dance in the shows. The faculty are professional dancers with degrees in dance. The Artistic Director, Cem Catbas, is also the co-founder and Director of Baltimore Ballet Company. Awards he has won include the 2006 and 2002 Individual Artist Award for excellence in solo dance performance from the Maryland State Arts Council, a Gold Medal in the 1st International Seleznyov Ballet Competition in 1991, and the Most Promising Dancer Award from the city of Istanbul.
The school offers small class sizes and classes for children, teens, and adults. The facilities include three large studios with high ceilings, observation windows into all studios, a large waiting room, and plenty of free parking. Cem Catbas has been a judge for several competitions including the Frederick Arts Council and a panelist for the Maryland State Arts Council, has given master classes in the US, Canada, and Europe, and appeared in the May and June 2012 issues of Dance Magazine. Students have gone on to dance professionally, including with New York City Ballet and the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes, have won awards such as 1st Prize at the regional Youth America Grand Prix Competition and the Maryland Distinguished Scholar Award, and have received full scholarships to the School of American Ballet and other schools.
